MILESTONE: Deputy Chief Minister M.K. Stalin handing over the first copy of silver jubilee souvenir of MIET Group of Institutions to the Chairman of MIET Council S.M. Asan Mohamed in Tiruchi on Friday. — TIRUCHI: Introduction of 3.5 per cent reservation for Muslims by the State Government in 2007 has resulted in enlargement of educational and job opportunities for the community youths, Deputy Chief Minister M.K. Stalin said here on Friday. Inaugurating the silver jubilee celebrations of the MIET Group of Institutions here, Mr. Stalin said 54 students of the community took up medicine and 4,885 joined engineering programmes during 2008-09 owing to the reservation. Since the reservation came into effect, 747 Muslim youths including 248 graduate teachers, 57 postgraduate teachers, and 54 doctors have been appointed in Government departments. For the benefit of Muslim girl students, the Government has constructed hostels at a cost of Rs. 35 lakh in the districts of Coimbatore, Dindigul, Tiruchi, Tirunelveli, and Vellore. The Deputy Chief Minister cited the start of 11 constituent colleges of Anna Universities, including five at Thanjavur, Dindigul, Tuticorin, Nagercoil and Tiruvannamalai during the current academic year; abolition of entrance examination for professional courses in 2007 with the purpose of creating opportunities for rural students; the start of Central University in Tiruvarur district and Indian Institute of Management in Tiruchi district; fee exemption provided for three lakh students of Government and aided Arts and Science colleges; and recognition of best institutions and teachers with awards as the measures taken by the State Government to put Tamil Nadu in the forefront of education. The trend of students coming from elsewhere to Tamil Nadu for higher education was a sign of the progress, Mr. Stalin said. Calling upon the student community to make the most of their studentship, the Deputy Chief Minister lauded the MIET group of institutions for its concession schemes for economically and socially backward students. Chairman of MIET group of institutions Mohamed Yunus presided over. Mr. Stalin handed over the silver jubilee souvenir to Chairman of MIET Council Asan Mohamed and honoured freedom fighter Mohamed Gani in the presence of Union Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment D. Napoleon, Ministers K.N. Nehru and N. Selvaraj, former Rajya Sabha MP K.M. Khadar Mohideen, and Principal P.M. Mansure. MLAs, including K.N. Sekaran, Anbil Periyasami and Rani, also took part.
