Staff Reporter

It has groomed more than 10,000 engineers over five decades.

PALAKKAD: The NSS College of Engineering at Akathethara, near here, began its year-long golden jubilee celebrations on Saturday with a function to chalk out a detailed programme.

The college, established in July 1960 during the Second Five-Year Plan, is one of the earliest engineering educational institutions in Kerala.

It began as an initiative by the Nair Service Society (NSS) under the leadership of the late Mannath Padmanabhan, with assistance from the Union and the State governments and affiliation from the University of Calicut.

The college started with three branches of engineering — civil, mechanical and electrical and electronics engineering.

Other branches, namely instrumentation and control, electronics and communication and computer science were started in 1980, 1986 and 1999, respectively.

Over the five decades, the college has groomed more than 10,000 engineers.

It has strong alumni chapters in various cities and countries around the world, including Bangalore, Chennai, Kozhikode, Kochi, the UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia and the U.S.

The college is gearing up to celebrate the jubilee with various programmes spread over the year, both on the Palakkad campus and at various alumni chapter locations, M.R. Vikraman, Principal of the college, said.

Alumni block

The alumni association has drawn up many activities, including construction of an alumni block on the campus, golden jubilee scholarships for needy students, technical seminars, technical publications and so on, Prakash Bare, president of the association, said.
