Union Minister’s statement on Telanagana biased, says PR leader

Charge Congress and TDP with lacking a uniform stand and being divided on regional lines

KADAPA: The UPA Government should evolve a nation-wide policy on creation of new States, but not treat the Telangana issue in isolation, Praja Rajyam Polit Bureau member and former MP C. Ramachandraiah demanded on Sunday.

Accusing Union Home Minister P. Chidamabaram of being biased towards Telangana, he demanded his ouster from the Union Cabinet, as he was not with “an open mind”.

Addressing at a press conference here, he wondered if Mr. Chidambaram made his pro-Telangana statement in December in capacity of Union Home Minister or as a Congress leader.

Questioning if the announcement was approved by the Union Cabinet, he alleged that it was unilaterally made by Congress and was being opposed by all UPA coalition partners like M. Karunanidhi, Mamatha Banerjee, Farooq Abdullah and Sharad Pawar. Mr. Chidambaram could divide the State at will, as the sentiments of crores of people were involved, he said.

A committee proposed to be constituted should comprise experts from the judiciary, administration, revenue, irrigation and sociologists and consider the Statehood demand in Telangana and several States in the country.

‘Identify problem’

Stating that the committee should identify problems, he wanted ways to resolve them explored without the need for bifurcation of the State. He deplored the propaganda that the committee was pre-determined to recommend Statehood to Telangana.

Charging the Congress and Telugu Desam with lacking a uniform stand and being divided on regional lines.

He accused Telangana leaders of instigating students. The PR leader termed the pro-Telangana agitators’ stress on backwardness of the region as a “bogey”.

He pooh-poohed their latest claims of fighting for their self-respect.

PR district president B. Hariprasad, district secretary N. Srinivasa Rao, city president V.V. Chalapathi and others participated.
