Veteran actor honoured

CHENNAI: Veteran actor M.G. Murugan (86) of drama troupe Seva Stage was conferred the ‘Hamsadhwani R. Ramachandran Drama Award’ on Sunday for his contribution to performing arts.

The award, carrying a citation, a memento and cash prize of Rs.10,000 was presented by director Venkat at the concluding day of the 6th drama series of Hamasdhwani, which was dedicated to playwright Raadhu. Addressing the gathering, Mr. Venkat said it was a great honour to felicitate Mr. Murugan, who has had more than 5,000 stage appearances since 1940.

R. Sundar, Hamsadhwani secretary and son of its founder, R. Ramachandran, said that they have been conducting the dramas series for the last six years. In 2008, actor Typist Gopu was honoured and last year veteran film and theatre actor A.K.Veeraswamy. Mentioning that it was a daring and inspiring effort by his father to bring drama to this part of the world, he said that Mr. Murugan had given sterling performances in several plays including ‘Policekaran Magal,’ ‘Vadivelu Vadhyar’ and ‘Therotti Magan’.

Veteran stage artist-dramatist Koothapiran, who felicitated Mr. Murugan, said “One of the good qualities of Mr. Murugan is that he does not fail to appreciate others for their fine performances.”
