Sabitha expresses shock over brutal murder of Vaishnavi

HYDERABAD: A shocked Home Minister P. Sabitha Reddy expressed anguish that Vaishnavi could not be saved in spite of the best efforts by the police and said the culprits behind the kidnapping and killing would be nabbed shortly.

Speaking to The Hindu from the venue of a public meeting at Tandur in Ranga Reddy district on Monday night, she said a special investigation team would be formed to handle the case and bring the offenders before the law. She said she had spoken with the father of the girl, Prabhakar Rao, on phone on Sunday, offering whatever help he required to trace his daughter and advising him that he could guide the police on different angles and clues on which they could proceed with the investigation of the case.

Asked if the tragic end was due to police failure to act swiftly, she said facts would be ascertained by the government and if there was police failure as alleged, the guilty among the police would not be allowed to go scot-free. The Home Minister said fast track courts would be set up to ensure quick trial in such cases and severe punishment handed out to the culprits.

Murder condemned

Chief Minister K. Rosaiah, in a late night message, condemned the “ghastly” killing of Naga Vaishnavi. Calling it a “gruesome act”, he said: “The murder of an innocent ten-year-old child is a tragic incident that is bound to put any civilised society to shame.” The Chief Minister’s Office has stated that Mr. Rosaiah has taken the issue very seriously and the government will spare no effort in nabbing the culprits. BJP State President Bandaru Dattatreya condemned the gruesome murder of ten-year-old Vaishnavi in Guntur, calling it an “uncivilised act bound to shock any civilised society”. Alleging laxity on part of the police he demanded the government to punish the culprits severely so that such incidents are not repeated in the future. Meanwhile, TDP president N. Chandrababu Naidu, expressing shock at the heinous murder, spoke to Mr. Prabhakara Rao over telephone and offered his condolences.
