GREAT WORK: Chief Minister K. Rosaiah presenting Genome Valley Excellence award to Janet Thornton, Director, EMBL European Bio-informatics Institute, Cambridge, in Hyderabad, on Wednesday. HYDERABAD: The four-day ‘BioAsia-2010’ was inaugurated here on Wednesday with Chief Minister K. Rosaiah announcing that leading companies proposed to invest Rs.1,000 crore to create infrastructure of plug-and-play lab space in the third phase of Biotech Park near here. The Chief Minister also unveiled the plaque to mark the inauguration of Alexandria Centre for Science and Innovation in Genome Valley, where the institute proposed to invest Rs.500 crore. Apart from M/s Lonza, which plans to invest Rs.750 crore for R&D and bio-pharmaceutical manufacturing facility, the other companies include Avesthagen, Globion, Indian Immunologicals and Parsvnath Biotech. He said that having a pro-industry policy in place, AP biotech industry cluster recorded revenue of Rs. 2,188 crore in 2008-09 with more than 18 per cent share in the total biotech industry (next only to Maharashtra and Karnataka). The State government was committed to promoting the State as a biotech research hub in the country. He urged biotechnologists to work closely with pharma industry to promote the manufacture of good quality medicines and dietary supplements. He also presented the Genome Valley Excellence Awards to C.R. Rao, director, Centre for Multivariate Analysis, Pennsylvania State, USA and Janet Thornton, Director, EMBL European Bio-informatics Institute, Cambridge, UK. M.K. Bhan, Secretary, Department of Biotechnology, told reporters later that the department would be funding a record 120 companies for innovative projects by the end of this month. Over the next five years, the innovation grants would be scaled up for 1,000 projects.
