Patients screened for cancer at special camp

DINDIGUL: Twenty persons with cancer were identified in a special camp organised by Devaki Cancer Institute, Madurai held at the Collectorate near here on Wednesday to get treatment under Kalaignar Insurance Scheme for Life Saving Treatment. District Collector M. Vallalar inaugurated the camp.

The Managing Director of the hospital, P.S. Nagendran, said that 15 cases were recommended for biopsy tests. The patients had neck, cervix, node cervical and chest cancer.

Two cases were recommended for immediate surgery, 10 cases for radio therapy and eight cases for medical oncology (chemotherapy).

Radiation Oncologist N. Rajaraman, Surgical Oncologist M. Ramesh and Hospital Medical Officer I. Inbasagaran diagnosed the patients and recommended them for advanced treatment in Madurai. Treatment would be given to them free of costs, he added.

Joint Director of Health Services T. Jayabal said that the Department of Health Services would conduct two special camps, one for eye ailments at the Collectorate on Friday and a general medical camp on February 11 in Kodaikanal. The camp on the hill station would be very useful to the tribal people living in remote and inaccessible villages.

Patients having diseases other than cancer too were diagnosed and referred to respective hospitals for treatment. A total of 110 persons took part in the camp till afternoon, he added.
