Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan addressing a symposium on ‘Urgency in Addressing the Needs of Environment and Conservation of Wildlife’ in the Madhya Pradesh Assembly in Bhopal on Friday. Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar (centre) and State Assembly Speaker Ishwardas Rohani were also present on the occasion.

Bhopal: Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Friday advocated a model code of conduct for MPs and MLAs to maintain decorum of the parliamentary fora.

“The standard of legislature bodies is eroding and it is necessary to formulate a model code of conduct for its conservation,” Mr. Chauhan said while addressing the symposium on ‘Urgency in Addressing the Needs of Environment and Conservation of Wildlife’ in the State Assembly here.

The Chief Minister appealed Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar, who was chairing the symposium, to take an initiative on the issue.

Referring to global warming, Mr. Chauhan said that it was the result of nature’s unchecked exploitation.

Unrestricted exploitation of nature is not in the interest of environment, he said. “Human beings must learn a lesson from the rules of the forests.”

Environment would not merely improve by enacting and implementing laws, but it would change only when people sensitise themselves and take an initiative on the issue, Madhya Pradesh Assembly Speaker Ishwardas Rohani added.

Advocating the need for ecologically sustainable development, Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar said social and economic growth should be in tandem with conserving environment and wildlife.

“There is no doubt that economic and social development of our people and poverty eradication are essential but the path of development has to be ecologically sustainable,” she saidat the symposium organised on the concluding day of the presiding officers’ meet.

She said: “It is not only our responsibility but also a compulsion for our survival that we protect and conserve our environment and wildlife while pursuing the model of development.” — PTI/ IANS
