Kozhikode: Pradeep Kumar, MLA, inaugurated the three-day Fossmeet@NITC 2010 on Friday in the presence of Dr. G.R.C. Reddy, Director, NIT Calicut. In his speech, Mr.Pradeep Kumar encouraged students and FOSS enthusiasts to expand their working arena beyond the engineering college campuses and join the government in the IT initiative to popularise the use of computer among the masses. Mr.Pradeep Kumar promised all support to the FOSS (Free and Open Source Software) enthusiasts for bringing the free software movement among the public. The inaugural function was followed by a talk on free software by Dr.V. Sasikumar, member of the board of directors of the Free Software Foundation of India (FSF). The second day started with a talk on Scribus, a desktop publishing software, by Sri Jain Basil. This was followed by a talk on the Kerala State IT Mission by Ando Davis. A workshop on Blender, a 3D modelling and animation software, was conducted by the GNU Open Movie TeamThere will be a talk on ‘FOSS and Technology’ by Atul Chitnis, vice-president at Geodesic Ltd, on the third day. It will also feature a session on Inkscape, a vector graphics editor much similar to Adobe Illustrator, by Hiran Venugopalan, an active member of the FOSS community and the winner of the Google Summer of Code 2007. More than 200 participants from various engineering colleges and free software professionals are attending the meet. The event is jointly organised by the IEEE Student Branch, Computer Society of India, Computer Science Department and the FOSS Cell, NIT Calicut.
