Protest by automotive service sector workers

Special Correspondent

They want better rehabilitation package

Oppose drive to evict those within city limits

Bidar: Those in the local automotive service industry staged a protest in front of the City Municipal Council office here on Friday alleging government insensitivity. The former MLA Zulfekar Hashmi led the protest seeking a better rehabilitation package from the Government.

In a memorandum submitted to the CMC authorities, they alleged that the present rehabilitation policy initiated by the district administration was biased and “genuine people” engaged in the business had been neglected.

The memorandum said that according to proceedings initiated by the Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board (KIADB) in 1998, around 23 acres of land had been earmarked for an Auto Nagar. But the present Auto Nagar project executed by the district administration on an open ground earmarked for parking space was insufficient to carry out business.

The protesters said that as per the present rehabilitation plan of the district administration, an area comprising several 15 x 20 ft sites was being allotted to beneficiaries while the plan mooted by the KIADB proposed to give them 30 x 40 ft sites.

Apart from this, another one acre of land had been earmarked for parking vehicles as per the old proposal of the KIADB.

They also condemned the CMC drive to seal automotive service establishments within the city.

Sealing their businesses without giving them alternative business space was illegal, they alleged, and urged the CMC not to deprive them of their livelihood.
