Rs. 42-crore aid disbursed to construction workers

14 welfare boards set up for workers in unorganised sector

DHARMAPURI: Assistance to the tune of Rs. 42 crore was distributed to 2.5 lakh members of the Construction Workers Welfare Board, Ponkumar, Chairman, Construction Workers’ Welfare Board said here recently.

Distributing assistance to the members of the board in Pennagaram, he said the government had announced a pension scheme for the poor and uneducated workers in the unorganised sectors if they attain 60 years of age, which was till now available for government servants. He explained about various assistance announced by the DMK government headed by Chief Minister Karunanidhi.

He said as many as 14 welfare boards were established for workers in the unorganised sector.

The work on enumeration of members was computerised in the district. A Labour Welfare Office had started functioning in Dharmapuri from October 10, 2008.

Presiding over the function, District Collector P. Amutha said Rs. 1.37-crore welfare assistance was distributed to 502 members of the Construction Workers’ Welfare Board.

The assistance extended was for marriage, natural death, accident relief, for buying spectacles and old-age pension.

She appealed to the people to give good education to their wards to become economically sound to lead their life in a respectable manner.
