TAPPING TECHNOLOGY: Collector N. Mathivanan commissioning the water purification plant at Vadivelkarai near the city. MADURAI: For the 600-odd family members of Vadivelkarai, a village 12 km away from here, it was a memorable day. The villagers can now draw pure drinking water round-the-clock from a unit for just Rs. 2. By inserting two one-rupee coins, they would get 15 litres of water in their containers, said Collector N. Mathivanan after dedicating the novel facility in the presence of panchayat president L. Arumugam and a large number of villagers on Thursday. The unit has been installed at a cost of Rs. 5.40 lakh with public contribution and the Collector’s discretionary funds. Water is pumped from a borewell and purified through reverse osmosis system and served to the public. Mr. Mathivanan told reporters that though a similar facility was available at Iravathanallur, another village in the outskirts of the city, providing potable water by placing two one rupee coins through a vending system, the Vadivelkarai unite was the first of its kind in the State. Another unit was being installed at Viraganoor at a cost of Rs. 7 lakh. S. Jayaraj (48) of the village said, “It is a dream come true the 600-odd residents of Vadivelkarai. At a time when we were making do with water from sources such as ‘uppu thanni kinaru’ (salt water well), this facility has come as a boon for all,” he said.
