Of intellectual property rights and their protection

Vice-Chancellor of VTU H.P. Khincha spoke



Deliberations begin: H.P. Khincha, Vice-Chancellor of VTU, Belgaum, inaugurating the workshop on patenting at SDM College of Engineering and Technology in Dharwad.

HUBLI: H.P. Khincha, Vice-Chancellor of the Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU), has said that government educational institutions have a crucial role to play with regard to patenting and protecting intellectual property rights.

He was delivering the keynote address after inaugurating a regional workshop on “Unleashing Innovation and Patenting in Technical Institutions” organised by the SDM College of Engineering and Technology in Dharwad on Saturday.

Elaborating on the various issues of intellectual property rights and their role in technical education, he spoke about the role of various stakeholders and their responsibilities.

Principal and Director of the college M.N. Sudheendra Rao presided over the inaugural function. M.V. Shankar, Principal Scientist of Dow Chemicals, Pune, Parasu Veera of Nanobud, Hyderabad, and Tilak Raj of Avigna Pharmaceuticals, Bangalore, delivered lectures on various issues concerning patenting. It was followed by a panel discussion on “How to make innovation happen in technical institutions” and a practical session on patent search for students.

The KLE Society’s Institute of Nursing Sciences, Hubli, celebrated the Lamp Lighting and Oath Taking Ceremony of the seventh batch of nursing students last week. Inaugurating the event, Registrar of the Karnataka State Nursing Council H.L. Ramamurthy elaborated on the evolution of nursing and the significant role of nurses in saving life. Principal of College of Nursing, NIMHANS, Bangalore, Ramachandra, called upon the students to practice with loyalty, honesty and punctuality. Principal of KLE University’s Institute of Nursing Sciences Sudha, Director of KLE Society S.C. Metagud and Principal of the college Sanjay Peerapur were present.

Connecting

Students of the Global Business School (GBS) experienced the joy of helping others last week. The students voluntarily contributed money and helped the residents of Seva Sadan, an orphanage, with schoolbags, groceries and other materials. Students Preeti and Shweta coordinated the event. Director of GBS Ramakant Kulkarni, officials of Seva Sadan and faculty members of GBS were present.

‘Akruti’

The KLE College of Physiotherapy, Hubli, held “Akruti-2010” to mark its annual day celebrations recently. Inaugurating the programme Mohan Limbikai, MLC, stressed the need for popularising physiotherapy.

The former president of the Karnataka Chamber of Commerce and Industry Madan Desai said that apart from professional competence, communication skills were also important for health professionals.

Dr. Harish Joshi and Principal Dr. Veena Bembalagi were present. The programme concluded with cultural programmes by the students.
