Sonia flags off 12 trains

Special Correspondent

LUCKNOW: UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi flagged off 12 new trains from Kanpur Central on Sunday. Among them are the Kanpur-New Delhi Shatabdi Express, the Lucknow-New Delhi Duranto Express, the Allahabad-New Delhi Duranto Express, the Gorakhpur-Lokmantilak Express, the Lucknow-Agra Inter-City Express and the Lucknow-Yashwantpur Express. Nine trains, including the Varanasi-Lucknow Varuna Express, have been extended.

Ms. Gandhi said that it was after a long gap that U.P. got so many new trains. The Centre, she said, wanted speedy development of the State, but it would be possible only with the cooperation of other parties. Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee and Minister of State for Coal Sri Prakash Jaiswal attended the function.

More than 20 BJP workers were arrested when they attempted to show black flags to Ms. Gandhi.
