Drogba delivers

LONDON: First-half goals from Didier Drogba earned Chelsea a 2-0 win over Arsenal at Stamford Bridge on Sunday. The win secured Chelsea a return to the top of the Premier League, two points ahead of Manchester United.

Drogba was left unmarked at the far post in the eighth minute and simply poked home John Terry’s header from a Florent Malouda corner. Fifteen minutes later he struck again after a speedy counter-attacking move from Frank Lampard found him on the right of the area. Drogba stepped inside Arsenal full back Gael Clichy and gave goalkeeper Manuel Almunia no chance.

The result leaves Arsenal nine points adrift of Chelsea and seven behind Manchester United.

In an earlier match, Kevin Phillips scored twice in the last 10 minutes to give Birmingham City a 2-1 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The results: Chelsea 2 (Drogba 8, 23) bt Arsenal 0; Birmingham City 2 (Phillips 80, 85) bt Wolverhampton 1 (K. Doyle 42). — Agencies
