OGH extending hi-tech nephrology services

HYDERABAD: The Nephrology Department of Osmania General Hospital (OGH) has started making rapid strides in the recent past in providing hi-tech and very expensive kidney related services to poor patients.

Among several hi-tech procedures related to kidney, thanks to Arogyasri scheme, the department has also started providing free dialysis services to patients who need transplantation, but are unable to do so, due to uncertainty over availability of organs.

OGH has emerged as the only Government hospital in the State to be able to provide all the top five packages related to nephrology and covered under Arogyasri scheme.

At present, OGH has started to provide kidney biopsy, cases of acute renal failure, dialysis and transplantation services for adults and children. In a recent development, the department doctors have also started providing medical services to persons with nephrotic syndrome. The nephrotic syndrome, quite rare and usually occurs in children, is a disorder in which the kidneys are damaged, as a result they start leaking large amounts of protein from blood into the urine. Under Arogyasri scheme, the department has received 15 dialysis machines along with additional paramedical staff, doctors and nurses for smooth operation. The new dialysis units are being operated in two shifts in a day and in future, the hospital doctors have said that one more shift will be added to meet the huge demand for dialysis. Already, over 100 chronic kidney patients are making use of the special dialysis unit being maintained with support from Arogyasri.
