CII launches MES scheme

Staff Reporter

Tirupur: A total of one million people will be trained and certified in various trades in the country under the Centre-sponsored Modular Employable Skills (MES) scheme before 2011-12 fiscal, according to N. Aswarthanarayanappa, Regional Director, Directorate General of Employment and Training, Government of India.

“Presently, the Union Ministry of Labour and Employment is offering 1,090 skill-development courses, spread over 50 industrial sectors, under the MES scheme,” he said. Mr. Aswathanarayanappa was inaugurating the MES assessment programme introduced by Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), which is the assessing body for MES scheme, in Tirupur knitwear cluster, on Monday.

He said that in the initial phase, about 70,000 skilled garment workers predominantly from socially disadvantaged sections of society, would be assessed and given certification based on their skill levels.

Explaining the salient features of MES scheme, he said that it was conceptualised to provide vocational training not only to existing workforce but also to school leavers and ITI pass outs, among others, so as to improve their employability.

All the courses developed under MES were demand driven chalked out in consultation with the industry.

One of the key features of the scheme was that the certification given to the candidates, who successfully complete the MES programme, had international recognition.

CII (southern regional headquarters) Director Stella and CII (southern regional headquarters) Executive Officer Akhila Ramesh were present.
