Kozhikode: The Islamic Chair of the University of Calicut will organise an international seminar on Amir Khusrow, father of Qawwali, the devotional music of the Indian Sufis, at the Seminar Complex on the campus on February 9 and 10. Mohammed Abdul Latheef Abdo, Egyptian Embassy Press and Information Attaché, will inaugurate the seminar at 11 a.m. Vice- Chancellor Anvar Jahan Zuberi will preside over the inaugural session. C.H. Ashique, C.P. Aboobacker, Fasal Gafoor, M.A. Abdulla, C.P. Kunhamaed and K. Modiu, Syndicate members, and Registrar T.K. Narayanan will speak. T.P. Rajeevan, Public Relations Officer of the university, said here on Monday that experts from various universities would speak at various sessions. They are M.S. Assisudheen (Jamia Milia Islamia); Sharmila Rai (University of Calcutta); Liyakath Moine (Aligarh Muslim University); and Iqbal Ali Khan and Najma Parveen Ahamed (Delhi University). M.K. Raghavan, MP, will inaugurate the valedictory session. Additional Chief Secretary K. Jayakumar will be the chief guest. Amir Khursrow, who lived during 1253-1325 in Delhi, was one of the popular Persian poets who lived outside Iran. He is credited with introducing Persian and Arabic elements in Hindustani classical music. This Sufi musician contributed to different styles of music, such as Khayal and Tarana, and developed various instruments, such as the tabla and the sitar.
