‘Reach results of research to farming community’ Award-winning farmers felicitated Kozhikode: District panchayat president K.P. Kunjammed Kutty Master on Monday inaugurated a five-day farmers’ festival ‘Karshika Sankethika Darshanam-2010,’ jointly organised by the Indian Institute of Spices Research (IISR), Calicut, and Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), at Peruvannamuzhi. Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Kutty said mechanisation and adoption of innovative agricultural technologies were essential to make agriculture a commercially viable option. Stating that traditional methods alone would not help farmers to increase their yield, he said the results of agricultural research should be transferred to the farming community. IISR director V.A. Parthasarathy said there were concerns over “technology fatigue” in agriculture and horticulture. He suggested that the farming community should follow the package of practices suggested by the IISR to solve their problems. Dr. Parthasarathy, however, observed that the mass media with dedicated space and time for agriculture have been playing a key role in transferring agricultural technologies to the farming community. S. Prabhukumar, zonal project director, KVKs, Bangalore, delivered the keynote address. Nagesh Kumar, assistant general manager, NABARD; M. Tamil Selvan, director, Directorate of Areca nut and Spices (DASD), Calicut; V.M. Muhammed, deputy director, State Horticultural Mission; M.M. Mathai, deputy director, District Animal Husbandry Office, Calicut, among others, spoke. Farmers who won awards were felicitated during the function. The award winners also shared their experience with the audience. Subject experts from various agricultural research institutes answered farmers’ queries relating to agriculture, horticulture, fisheries and animal husbandry.
