Visitors prevented from carrying plastic

Strict rule: Security personnel asking visitors at the zoo to empty their plastic covers and use eco-friendly paper bags.

HYDERABAD: On its part, the Nehru Zoological Park has been successful to a large extent in keeping the plastic away from its 400-acre sprawling premises and thereby preventing its collection of animals getting exposed to the perils of the plastic.

Sustaining for the last few years with a ban on entry of plastic in the zoo premises, the authorities have initiated checking at the entrance itself where visitors are asked to dump the prohibited material in every form from carry bags to glasses outside only.

Thorough check

“Visitors usually come with packed food and fruits and other snacks in plastic carry bags. However, we dissuade them from bringing the plastic material inside and our staff thoroughly check what is being carried inside at the entrance itself,” an official said.

The worry of the authorities here is the danger that harmless looking carry bags could do to the animals. The move to prohibit plastic at the zoo was taken a few years back following concerns of animals feeding on them and subsequently ending up in danger.

It also followed the death of three deer and suspicions on them having consumed the plastic littered in the premises by visitors.

Deposit counter

A counter too has been set up for visitors to the zoo where they can deposit their carry bags and water bottles and collect back the same while returning, informed the zoo director, K. Bhupal Reddy.
