HYDERABAD: Yoga guru Baba Ramdev has vehemently opposed the introduction of Bt brinjal in the country arguing that consumption of genetically modified food led to disorders of liver and kidney disorders. “By encouraging GM foods we are killing our traditional varieties and letting foreign companies take over our country,” he said at a press conference here on Monday.

“When other countries have opposed GM food, why are we allowing them?” he asked. He said it was pointless to take the opinion of the farmers on the issue in the public consultations. “Over 99 per cent of farmers in this country are illiterate. How will they be aware of the ill effects of GM crops?” he asked. On Shiv Sena’s ‘Mumbai for Marathis’ campaign, Ramdev said he was against all those who advocated such kind of division.

The yoga guru expressed his angst over the rampant corruption saying India could become an economic superpower if corruption was curbed. On the ongoing IPL controversy, he maintained that sports won’t help bridge the gap between the countries. “India and Pakistan have been playing cricket since 60 years. How has it been of any use?” he questioned.
