Thiruvananthapuram: The joint action council of college and university teachers in the State is preparing to launch an indefinite strike against the government’s failure to implement the recommendations of the sixth University Grants Commission (UGC)-All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) pay revision commission. Addressing a press conference here on Monday, P. Reghunath, general secretary, All Kerala Private College Teachers’ Association; K. Jayakumar. general secretary, Association of Kerala Government College Teachers; and A.R. Rajan, general secretary, Federation of University Teachers’ Associations urged the government to implement the recommendations as a package, including revised pay and enhanced pension age. They said the failure to raise the retirement age would force the State to lose UGC assistance for pay revision, leaving it to mobilise Rs.2,000 crore from its own coffers. The leaders said college and university teachers were the only category which had not benefited from pay revision for the past 14 years. Most states in the country, they observed, had implemented the recommendations of the commission. They said the teachers would go on strike from the first week of March if the government continued to ignore their demands. The strike was likely to affect university examinations, they added. The action council will stage an indefinite satyagraha in front of the Secretariat from Wednesday. Centre of Indian Trade Unions State president K.N. Raveendranath is scheduled to inaugurate the satyagraha.
