I wish an Indian wins this week: Jeev

Special Correspondent

Jeev is all praise for Bhullar

Shiv Kapur looking for maiden European Tour title

GURGAON: Jeev Milkha Singh is still looking to win his first dollar-event in India. Still, whenever this amiable golfer makes an appearance for any Asian Tour event in India, he starts as the favourite. When the €1.5-million Avantha Masters golf tees off at the DLF Golf and Country Club here on Thursday, Jeev will be looking to break the jinx of not living up to the hype, even once.

“I wish an Indian wins this week. I hope, it’s me,” says Jeev, who will be playing his first event in the country after becoming a father recently.

Depth in the field

“There is plenty of depth in the field. There are many proven names from the Asian Tour and I see that many big names from the European Tour have given this event a miss. I feel an Indian can win the event.

“Gaganjeet Bhullar’s victory in Bangkok last week is superb news for Indian golf. I’ve always maintained he is immensely talented. I hope more Indians get inspired and push themselves harder this week.”

Jeev, currently 76th on the European Tour Race to Dubai standings after two appearances, sounded fairly satisfied with his form. “Last week, (in the Dubai Desert Classic), except for the last round (of 74), I was happy with the way I played (to finish tied 15th). I hope to get my game together this week. I am going to work out a few things with my friend Amritinder Singh. I think, this turns out a good week,” said Jeev before heading for a practice round.

Shiv Kapur, currently 13th on the ranking list after five appearances, will also be looking for his maiden European Tour title while Jyoti Randhawa and S.S. P. Chowrasia will be keen to end their poor run.

Randhawa optimistic

Randhawa, who will be returning to his home course, has reasons to be optimistic. “I’ve won two DLF Masters titles here and feel very confident. The course is playing well. The spells of rain have slowed down the greens a bit. But once the sun is out, the conditions will be perfect.
