Collector warns of action against misuse of highways

Special Correspondent

VILLUPURAM: Collector R. Palanisamy has warned of stringent action against those misusing four-lane highways. Inappropriate use of the highways had resulted in many fatal accidents, and hence the warning, he said.

In a review meeting with the officials here on Tuesday, he took stock of the progress of ongoing works on the highways, land acquisition, compensation to be given to the land providers and measures to be taken to prevent accidents.

Later, the Collector told reporters that excessive speed was the cause for many grave accidents.

Therefore, speed limit had been fixed at 80 kmph for light vehicles and 60 kmph for heavy vehicles.

He said town buses and mini-buses were making unscheduled halts on highways for picking up passengers. Such a practice not only hindered the traffic flow but also resulted in accidents.

He noted that these buses should take only the service lanes and stop only at designated places.

Another objectionable practice was that of drivers entering wrong lanes or one way to reduce distance.

The Collector noted that some drivers resorted to rash driving and recklessly crisscrossed unmindful of oncoming traffic. Haphazard parking of vehicles in front of motels was another dangerous practice.

The habit of using the roads as drying yards for agricultural produce should be discouraged and cattle should be prevented from straying.

Those found grazing cattle at the meadows on the medians would be prosecuted.
