Funds to the tune of Rs.2.69 crore sanctioned from MLA-LAD scheme

Panchayat accounts for SC population of a little over 20,000

PUDUCHERRY: The Villianur Commune Panchayat will take up several development works at Oussudu, Villianur and a major segment of Oulgaret during the current year. Separate proposals have been drawn up for providing basic amenities at areas with Scheduled Caste (SC) population.

Building roads, improvement and repair of existing roads, construction of concrete pavements and provision of drains are to be taken up with funds from the Member of Legislative Assembly Local Area Development (MLA-LAD) scheme.

Funds to the tune of Rs.2.69 crore have been sanctioned from the MLA-LAD scheme for carrying out various works in Oussudu, Villianur and part of Oulgaret constituencies this year. Of this, Rs.68 lakh has been allocated for the segment of Oulgaret constituency falling in the commune panchayat limits, said Commissioner of Villianur commune P. Seetharaman.

The commune panchayat will undertake several road works, including forming and metalling works of internal streets at Ganesh Nagar and Balaji Nagar at Sankaranpet, Kumaran Nagar at Manavely, Sendamarainagar at V. Thattanchavady, approach road of Pudhukuppam, Bismi Street at Sulthanpet, New Pallivasal Street and Borewell Street at Sulthanpet, internal streets of Kannadasan Nagar and cross street at Koonimudakku and provision of concrete roads and pavements at several areas with this fund.

The Town and Country Planning has sanctioned Rs.2.46 crore for carrying out works on main link roads, drains and improvement of existing roads.

The local body, with a total population of 89,000, accounts for SC population of a little over 20,000.

To provide basic amenities to areas with SC population in the commune, the Adi Dravidar Welfare Department has issued a Government Order sanctioning Rs.1.47 crore for various works.

“We have submitted a proposal to the department seeking Rs.137.72 lakh for taking up road and drain works, installation of high mast lamps and providing other basic amenities in the SC populated areas such as Uthiravahinipet and Dr. Ambedkar Nagar in Oulgaret and Thondamanatham in Oussudu. Another proposal is ready for taking up works at an estimate of Rs.348 lakh,” Mr. Seetharaman said.

The commune panchayat has also sought Rs.14.70 crore from National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development. “We are planning to spend Rs.2.86 crore of this for renovating the Villianur market,” he said.

As many as 20 road works will be taken up in slum areas through the Slum Clearance Board, he added.
