AITUC calls nationwide ‘Satyagraha’ on March 5
Staff Reporter
Kakinada: The All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) has called for a nationwide ‘Satyagraha’ on March 5 to highlight the problems faced by workers in the unorganised sector and larger issues of inflation and public sector disinvestment.
About five lakh workers and employees are expected to take part in the agitation, said AITUC State secretary K. Krishna Rao.
Addressing media persons here on Tuesday, Mr. Rao said the Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh, Indian National Trade Union Congress, Hind Mazdoor Sabha and Centre of Indian Trade Unions consented to participate in the protests. The decision to organise Satyagraha was taken by AITUC in its three – day general council meeting at Bhubaneswar that concluded on last Sunday.
The protests were aimed at exerting pressure on the Central Government to guarantee foolproof implementation of labour laws and to not weaken the public sector enterprises, particularly those making profits consistently. Instances of the workers’ rights being trampled were abound but the Governments were not taking remedial action. AITUC leaders P. Satyanarayana, P. Adinarayana and T. Ananta Rao spoke.
