More curbs on hiring retired government staff

CHENNAI: The State government has laid down further restrictions on the employment of retired government employees to vacancies in the administration.

A government official said that under the latest order issued about a week ago, retired government employees can be hired only in respect of those cases where vacancies are causing hardship to the public and there is considerable delay in filling such vacancies though the Tamil Nadu Public Services Commission (TNPSC) has been requisitioned to take steps for fresh recruitment.

The services of such employees will be terminated as soon as the Commission conveyed to the administration the selection of candidates.

The order has stipulated that the option of hiring retired officials should not be exercised in the case of vacancies that can be filled through employment exchanges and where the TNPSC has prepared the list of selected candidates for the posts of junior assistants and typists.

Temporary measure

Governor Surjit Singh Barnala, in his address to the Assembly last month, described the decision to hire retired government employees to vacancies as a temporary measure and stated that “this temporary measure should neither be construed as affecting the opportunities of the youth waiting for employment nor as an extremely harsh measure of banning recruitment altogether.”
