Fund to take care of unorganised labourers

Labour department plans to collect Rs. 1000 cr. through cess

It has registered 9 lakh workers and ID cards given to them


GUNTUR: Builders involved in construction of structures, which are valued over Rs.10 lakh, will now have to pay one per cent cess to the Department of Labour, which in turn would pool the amount into a Labour Welfare Fund, Commissioner of Labour Dasari Srinivasulu said here on Tuesday.

In an informal chat with reporters on the sidelines of a zonal review meeting held with the deputy commissioners, Department of Labour of Guntur, Prakasam and Nellore districts, Mr. Srinivasulu said the department had set an ambitious target of collecting Rs.1,000 crore.

The Department has made provisions for reimbursing Rs.2 lakh to bereaved families of workers, who die in mishaps, would meet the costs of paying compensation to families of workers who suffer injuries, Rs.25,000-Rs.50,000 to those getting injured.

The Commissioner also said cheques of Rs.2 lakh were given away to families of 13 construction workers, who were recently killed when a four-storied building caved in at Narayanguda in Hyderabad.

Explaining some other initiatives taken up by the department, he said as part of a drive to register construction workers in unorganised sector, the department has registered 8 lakh workers across the State and all of them were given I.D cards.

The Department has been acting pro-actively in issues of forced migration and child labourers, he said and pointed out that recently the department in coordination with the Prakasam district administration had sent back 60 workers from Orissa.

Referring to increasing incidences of child labour, he said the Labour Department plans to work with ICDS workers in villages. Joint Commissioner, Guntur district, M.N. Varahala Reddy was also present.
