KOLKATA: Stating that “the wrong policies of the UPA government” were solely responsible for price rise, senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader Murali Manohar Joshi said here on Tuesday that his party had called for a rally in Delhi on March 13 to protest against the escalating prices and other issues. “There is no pricing policy of the Centre,” Mr. Joshi said, adding that the current situation was caused by the “complete mismanagement by the government as was seen in the bungling in the policy regarding sugar.” Currently, 65 percent of the sugar produced in the country is used by large corporations involved in manufacturing ice-creams, cola drinks, confectionaries and sweets, and another 20 percent goes to those below the poverty line, leaving very little for the common consumer, Mr. Joshi said. Instead, the bulk 65 percent should be made available to the common man and big corporations should import the sugar needed, he added. Raising the demand for an “integrated pricing policy” and an “immediate halt to forward trading of food grains,” Mr. Joshi said his party would raise the matter in Parliament. He also criticised the Centre on the issue of buckling to pressure in conducting talks with Pakistan.
