Steps to reduce milk shortage

THIRUVANATHAPURAM: The government on Tuesday finalised certain measures to improve the availability of milk in the State, including procurement of additional quantities of milk from Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra.

Food and Civil Supplies Minister C. Divakaran held discussions with private dairy owners here on streamlining supply.

It was decided during the discussions that the cooperative milk societies should supply at least 25 per cent more milk cutting short on local sales. The private diaries were asked to increase their supply by 25 per cent, especially in the rural areas.

The State Cooperative Milk Marketing Society (Milma) would improve supply in the cities.

The Minister said that the managing Director of Milma was already in Chennai with the objective of getting more milk from Tamil Nadu.
