Police trace youth missing for 12 years

Staff Reporter

Thiruvananthapuram: The State cyber police have traced a 31-year-old youth who was missing for the past 12 years by tracking his activities on the Internet, chiefly his e-mail and social networking accounts.

The missing person, Jimmy Koruth, who was almost given up for dead by his relatives, was arrested from Adayar in Chennai last week.

Inspector General of Police Tomin Thachankery said Jimmy was reported missing since November 29, 2008, when he was studying at the Mar Ivanious College here.

Recently, one of Jimmy’s relatives told Circle Inspector, Pandalam, Zachariah Mathew that he had chanced upon an account created in the name of Jimmy Koruth in the social networking site, Orkut. Investigators found the account had been created on October 18, 2008. The account holder did not post his photograph on the site nor did he list anybody as friends or contacts.

The police found the account had been initiated from an Internet café in Chennai. They could not get any further details of the account holder as the café had shut down in 2008. The police subsequently traced the e-mail used for creating the account. They collected the user’s e-mail access details and usage history and discovered that he frequented an Internet café in Adayar in Chennai.

The police got the photostat copy of the driving licence the e-mail user had furnished as identity proof at the café. The images matched the photographs of the missing person. The police put plainclothesmen on a stake out outside the café and arrested Jimmy.
