CUTTACK: Bringing out one of the sensational setbacks in the East Zone Vijay Hazare Cricket Tournament, the underdogs Tripura on Wednesday defeated last year’s east zone champion Bengal by two wickets on the opening day of the tournament played here at Ravenshaw ground. In the other encounter played on the day at the Barabati Stadium, Jharkhand began its campaign in style outplaying Assam convincingly. Put into bat on the newly-laid track of Ravenshaw University, Bengal never looked comfortable against the Tripura attack from the start and lost wickets regularly. Helped by its opener Shreevats Goswami’s 36 off 67 balls, Bengal managed to put a paltry total of 162 losing all the wickets in 41.3 overs. Chasing an easy target to register a spirited victory, Tripura openers Wilkin Mota and Kaushik Aphle gave a perfect start to put 65 on the board in the opening stand. Despite some relief provided by the Bengal seamers in the middle overs removing the top orders, Tripura romped home with 10 balls to spare making 165 for 8. In the other one-sided match of the day, Jharkhand defeated Assam by eight wickets.
