‘Fast for the sake of poor’
Staff Reporter
BANGALORE: Member of Legislative Council and former Union Minister M.V. Rajasekharan has appealed to all Indians, starting from MPs, to observe a day’s fast every week to make food available to the poorest of the poor.
In the wake of severe food shortage due to several global changes, including economic and environmental, food security has come under severe threat and the poor people would become the first victims, Mr. Rajasekharan said in his appeal. Therefore, a time has come to mount a nationwide campaign to create awareness among general public to observe a day’s fast in a week, to save the consumption of food, he said.
“On my own, I have myself started observing a day’s fast every week from November 15, 2009,” Mr. Rajasekharan said. He has also written to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to make a similar appeal to the countrymen based on the call given by the Secretary-General of the United Nations and the Director General of Food and Agricultural Organisation in this behalf.
