VISAKHAPATNAM: Senior Congress leader and APCC executive member S. Gopal has welcomed the suggestion of Telangana Rashtra Samiti president K. Chandrasekhar Rao that Hyderabad could be made a Union Territory if Visakhapatnam was also given the same status. In an open letter addressed to Mr. Rao on Wednesday, he noted that people of north Andhra belonging to the three districts of Visakhapatnam, Vizianagaram and Srikakulam which were more backward than some districts of Telangana and Rayaseema, had a feeling that they were exploited either way – even in Andhra Pradesh at present or after separation of Telangana proposed by TRS. “But we did not demand a separate State so far because we believe in living together. When separation is forced on the State, we wish to express that Uttarandhra be made a UT with Visakhapatnam as headquarters," he said. Visakhapatnam was cosmopolitan and one of the reasons why the city could be made UT was that 60 to 70 per cent of workers were from Central industries.
