Panel to look into pond restoration

Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A project for the restoration of the Chengal Valiyakulam (pond) will be placed before the District Planning Committee, scheduled to meet next week, Union Minister of State for External Affairs Shasi Tharoor said here on Wednesday.

Speaking at a meeting organised by the Valiyakulam Punaruddharana Samithi, the Minister said the samithi should continue its activities.

Mr. Tharoor had visited the pond last month and directed the District Collector to prepare a report on restoration and tourism development prospects of the pond. He had also directed the Collector to find out if the pond restoration could be done under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme. A statement said 40 percent of restoration work on the pond had been completed.
