MANGALORE: The police have stepped up vigilance in Surathkal, Bajpe, Panambur and Bykampady areas in Panambur police sub-division following sporadic attacks on religious places in the last few days. A sense of unease prevails in these areas since February 5 when members of a community claimed that their religious place was desecrated. In the days that followed, both Hindus and Muslims claimed that their religious centres were desecrated. In view of these developments, the district police have requested owners of shops and commercial establishments to down shutters early. Superintendent of Police A.S. Rao has clarified that prohibitory orders have not been clamped in the areas as reported in a section of the media. Special teamMeanwhile, a special team comprising officers from across Puttur subdivision has been constituted to investigate the theft at the Puttur residence of MP D.V. Sadananda Gowda on February 8. Gold jewellery of 500 gm and Rs. 5 lakh cash were stolen from the house, according to the police.
