Regularisation of services sought

Staff Correspondent

Udupi: The Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) and BSNL Non-Permanent Workers’ Union staged a dharna in front of the office of the General Manager of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd. (BSNL) here on Wednesday demanding that services of contract and daily wage workers be regularised.

President of the union Shashidhar Golla said that there were nearly one lakh such workers in BSNL. These works were not being provided minimum wages, identity cards and medical facilities.

They could not even take holidays during festivals, he added.

These workers worked for over 12 hours a day. However, they did not enjoy benefits such as provident fund or ESI facility, Mr. Golla added.

These workers were being exploited by contractors who had hired them. The Board of Directors of BSNL should put an end to these “anti-labour” practices, Mr. Golla said.
