MADURAI: A ‘gene silencing’ project to identify the genes that cause liver/stomach cancer and come out with better diagnostic tools is under way at the Madurai Kamaraj University. The Department of Atomic Energy has sanctioned around Rs.1 crore for setting up cancer research infrastructure and develop novel therapeutics at the exclusive Cancer Genetics Laboratory in the School of Biological Sciences, MKU. “The first phase of the grant has been utilised for creating infrastructure in the Cancer Genetics Laboratory. Our objective is to develop genomic medicine through genomics and gene silencing approaches. Cancer-causing genes will be inactivated via drugs,” G. Kumaresan, Principal Investigator of the project, told The Hindu here on Sunday. Besides the DAE, the Department of Biotechnology, Government of India, is also participating in this project with funding support .
