KOCHI: With more than 12,000 plants and flowers in display, the 28th edition of the annual Cochin Flower Show organised by the District Agri-Horticulture Society was inaugurated here today by the High Court Justice Thottathil B. Radhakrishnan. Sprawling over a vast expanse, the show has everything to cater to the tastes of flower lovers. The show features 6,000 flowering plants and more than 10,000 ornamental plants from Bangalore, 2000-odd plants from households in the city, different varieties of bonsai plants, about 1,000 medicinal plants and fruit trees. Split into various sections, one of the sections has roses in abundance. There are the exotic summer snow roses of whitish blend with mild flagrance and semi-double setting of 9 to 16 petals to deep red roses. The trumpet shaped Petunia of South American origin adorns one of the stalls. Varieties of Vandas, native to South East Asia, that prefer bright light and warmth along with reasonable humidity are also present. Ornamental Cabbages in white and violet shades, with which the Kochiites may not be that familiar, are also on display. Not perfectly suited for the Kerala climate, they had been brought from neighbouring Bangalore. Apart from private players, the participants at the show include the Thripunithura Hill Palace, Kerala Books and Publications Society, and the Cochin International Airport Limited. The government presence at the show includes the State Agriculture Department, State Horticulture Mission, Vegetable and Fruit Promotion Council of Kerala (VFPCK), NABARD, Maradu and Muvattupuzha Agriculture Marketing Society are in with a massive collection of various agricultural produce collected directly from the farmers. A major attraction of this year’s show will be a 500-feet floral decoration by experts to popularise various aspects of art. Landscaping on a 2,000-sq.ft space based on the theme “a garden in every home” would also be a visual treat to the visitors. The entry to the show will be restricted between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. Admission fee will be Rs. 25 for adults and Rs. 10 for children. Leslie, general convener of the show, presided.
