A clarification

With reference to the letter “Mamma’s boy?” in the Reader’s Mail section of this edition this past Monday, we wish to clarify that the newspaper does not endorse the letter writer’s unsubstantiated allegation that Sharmila Tagore, Chairperson of the Central Board of Film Certification, had seemingly “prevailed upon the [Padma] awards jury to vote in favour of her son [Saif Ali Khan]”.

In fact, the CBFC has no control over the Awards Committee which finalises the names of the Padma Shri awardees.

While readers are entitled to their opinion on the merits of Mr. Khan -- or any of the other Padma recipients -- getting an award, the columns of The Hindu are not meant to be used for levelling personal accusations, especially those not backed by credible or verifiable information. The Hindu regrets the unintentional hurt the letter’s publication might have caused to Ms. Tagore.
