Lawyers object to display of government calendars in court halls

They urged the Chief Justice to replace government calendars with a new set of calendars

MADURAI: A section of lawyers practising in the Madras High Court Bench here have raised objection over displaying State government calendars, carrying pictures of the Chief Minister, inside the court halls.

The advocates feel that the presence of calendars, carrying the photographs of political figures, in court halls would give an impression as if the judiciary was an extension or a subordinate institution to the executive.

P. Rathinam (62), who had spearheaded a campaign against such display, said that a representation signed by 49 lawyers had been submitted to the Chief Justice of the High Court, H.L. Gokhale, on February 3.

The representation urged the Chief Justice to replace the government calendars with a new set of calendars without any element of political tone or colour to restore the faith of common people in the independence of judiciary.

Mr. Rathinam, also a social activist, had made another representation to the Chief Justice last year to permit non-vegetarian food in canteens established in court complexes across the State as was done in the Supreme Court as well as the Delhi High Court.

That memorandum was signed by 164 lawyers from Madurai, Chennai, Tiruchi, Karur, Erode and Thanjavur. Then, they also demanded displaying portraits of B.R. Ambedkar in all court halls besides installing his statue in the Madurai Bench.
