Tirupur: The transport department had launched a special drive across the district against commercial vehicles plying without retro reflective stickers. The stickers enable the vehicles visible to other road users in the night. Regional Transport Officer K. Pattappasamy warned that penalty would be imposed on violators since the reflective stickers were mandatory under Section 104 of Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989. According to the rule, white retro reflective sticker should be pasted on the front of the vehicle, red stickers on the rear and yellow along the sides. Thickness of the sticker strips should be 20 mm in case of the ones pasted on light commercial vehicles and 50 mm for the ones stuck on heavy commercial vehicles. “The drive is intended to bring down the accidents in the night hours as well as during twilight,” Mr Pattappasamy said. Mr. Pattappasamy said that checks would be strengthened over the next few days against the use of mobile phones while driving. Similarly, penalty would be imposed on people travelling in cars without fastening their seat belts. Number platesHe said that vehicle users should not affix any pictures, slogans or letters on the number plates of the vehicles other than the registration numbers assigned to each vehicle.
