RAMANATHAPURAM: Hundreds of devotees on Friday took part in the car festival of Sri Ramanathasamy temple in Rameswaram.

It was part of the Maha Sivarathiri festival being organised in Rameswaram. Amid chanting of hymns and raising slogans, the devotees pulled the decorated cars of Sri Ramanathasamy and Parvathavarthini.

The cars, which began from their bases at the east entrance by 10 a.m., reached their respective bases at 12 noon by travelling through south, west and north streets. The temple elephant also helped the devotees to pull the cars.

The pulling of cars was disrupted for about an hour, as a car was parked on the way of car festival.

Though announcement was made to remove the car, no one came forward. They could proceed further only after the devotees removed the locked by force.

Agitated devotees complained about the negligence on part of authorities in keeping the car routes neat and clean.

They also charged that the police should have taken adequate steps to park vehicles during the car festival time.
