An out-and-out flick for masses

Mamata Mohandas, Nagarjuna in ‘Kedi’

Film: Kedi

Direction: Kiran

Cast: Mamata Mohandas, Nagarjuna, Anushka and Sayaji Shinde

Lots of glamour, too much of violence, a neat ending that appears to make viewers say ‘Mera Bharat Mahaan’. That’s ‘Kedi’ for you. The frivolity of the screenplay in first half acquires seriousness when the hero turns ‘approver’, bashes up the baddies, helps the police nab a bunch of terrorists and recovers a large quantity of RDX explosive towards the climax.

Loopholes

l, there’s the inevitable love story intertwined in bits and pieces and a twist in the tale that is revealed towards the end, that is. The debutant director has experimented too much and not very effectively, with the ‘reverse screenplay’ technique (usage of the flashback mode). There are too many loopholes, which the director should have plugged but did not.

In effect, if viewers expected a film with tight screenplay, they are bound to be disappointed. However, what pulls the story along is sheer star presence, eye-pleasing visuals and soft music with Sandeep Chowta using more of bass in the drums and the ‘C’ major and minor strings/notes on the guitar and the keyboards.

The ‘Kedi’ (KD in short) makes up for all his illegal acts by helping the law enforcers and we see Sayaji Shinde the cop, ‘excusing’ the KD and letting him go for his help in tracking the terrorists. Interestingly, not many people know that KD expands as ‘known depredator’.

Exotic locales

Cinematographer Sarvesh Murari (‘Vikramarkudu’ fame) has beautifully showcased the song ‘Neevenaa, neevenaa ..’ song with Mamta and Nag, shot entirely in the exotic locales of Greece. There are three other songs shot in the pubs and casinos of Goa that are bound to be appealing to those who have never seen the insides of such establishments. Ace cinematographer P.C. Sriram’s influence perhaps, considering that Murari has used a lot of soft filters while not doing away with the natural lighting. ‘Kedi’ is expected to draw good openings in the ‘B’ and ‘C’ centres for the first week. After all, a ‘stylish’ Nag does have his own fans, right ? With Mamta Mohandas in the lead and a special number from glam doll Anushka, the glamour component is adequate. And for those who love the ‘dishum-dishum’, there’s enough of it.

Music from Sandeep Chowta is pretty good in this film that marks the silver jubilee year of the banner Kamakshi Kala Movies. Incidentally, producer D. Sivaprasada Reddy and Nag have been friends for 25 years!
