Sathyabama, Jeppiar enter final after narrow wins

CHENNAI: Sathyabama University and Jeppiar Engineering College will play the final of the CFA-S. Nagalingam Nadar memorial inter-collegiate football tournament at the Nehru stadium on Saturday.

In the semifinals held on Friday, Sathyabama edged out Loyola 6-5 via the tie break while Jeppiar nosed out Pachaiyappa’s 3-2 via tie break.

Sathyabama and Loyola were locked 2-2 at the end of regulation time, the scorers being Cho cho and Meanman for Loyola and Shabir Ali and Reagan for Sathyabama.

In the tie-break, Sathyabama scored 4-3 to earn the passage. For the winner, John, Binuraj, Aswin and Senthil converted where only Vinoba Gandhi, Charles and Sudhakar could succeed for Loyola.

In the other match, Jeppiar and Pachaiyappa’s were goalless at the final whistle and in the tie break, Jeppiar carved out a 3-1 win. Gautaman, Christodas and Nirmal Duraikannu were Jeppiar’s scorers where only Suresh could find the slot for the loser.

Earlier in the last of the quarterfinal league, Loyola defeated SRM University 2-0 thanks to a brace by Ranjith.

Overall title for TNCE

Central Excise, Tamil Nadu, won the overall championship with 137 points in the South Zone CRSB sports meet held in Bangalore recently.

TNCE’s P. Gopi was adjudged the ‘best male athlete’ and A. Ajitha was declared the ‘best female athlete’ in the meet. Chennai Customs won the volleyball and kabaddi titles while Central Excise, Bangalore, won the cricket and hockey trophies.

JHA Agarsen wins

JHA Agarsen defeated Alpha 25-19, 25-21 in the final of the inter-collegiate volleyball tournament, conducted by Asan Memorial College of Arts and Science here recently.

E.K. Purushotaman, Joint Secretary and Chairman, Asan Management Group, gave away the prizes.

Other results (semifinals): Agarsen bt AM Jain 25-22, 25-13; Alpha bt Sai Ram 25-14, 25-20.

Sathyabama triumphs

Sathyabama clinched the Centenary State-level inter-collegiate basketball tournament, defeating Loyola (Chennai) 75-58 in the final, organised by St. Joseph’s (Tiruchi). K.N. Ramajayam, President, Tamil Nadu Basketball Association, gave away the prizes.

St. Bede’s ‘A’ posts win

St. Bede’s scripted a nine-wicket win over PS SSS in the TNCA-B. Somasundaram Trophy under-14 schools cricket tournament (quarterfinal league) here on Friday.

The scores: PS SSS 79 in 35.5 overs (S. Porselvan three for 33, R. Ashwin three for one) lost to St. Bede’s ‘A’ 83 for one in 20.2 overs (S. Lokeshwar 26, M. S. Washington Sundar 37 not out).

Railway hockey

The Southern Railway Sports Association is organising the all India Railway hockey championship at the Mayor Radhakrishnan Stadium from February 15 to 20.

Western, South East Central, Eastern, Northern, South Central, West Central, North Central and Rail Coach Factory will take part in the championship. The Indian Railway team will be selected based on the performances in the championship. Northern Railway and South Central Railway are the reigning champion and runner-up respectively.

Sports scholarships

Sports scholarships worth over Rs 3.25 crore were given away to 66 students of the St. Joseph’s College of Engineering at a function held on Friday. This is the seventh consecutive year that the college is awarding scholarships to deserving sports talents in the college.

Arjuna awardee Devarajan, Southern Railway Sports Officer, was the chief guest and gave away the scholarships in the presence of B. Babu Manoharan, Director, St. Joseph’s College of Engineering and Dr Jolly Abraham, College Principal.
