NEW DELHI: The National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation launched sale of 20 kitchen food items at reasonable rates on Friday as part of its “Farm gate to home gate” initiative aimed at reducing the prices of commodities under its Easy Market Scheme.

The initiative was launched by Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit in the presence of Union Minister of State for Agriculture, Food, Consumer Affairs and Civil Supply K. V. Thomas, Delhi Food Minister Haroon Yusuf, NAFED Chairman Brijender Singh and Nafed Managing Director C. V. Anand Bose.

The Chief Minister said NAFED’S intervention in bringing down prices of essential food items had come on the directions of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. The scheme would help women in the Capital manage their kitchen budget better.

Pulses, sugar

Under the scheme, NAFED would now be selling seven varieties of pulses, sugar, coriander powder, turmeric powder, red chilli powder, amchur powder, garam masala, edible oil, tea, coconut oil, rice and onions at reduced prices by eliminating the profit that is earned by middlemen.

Ms. Dikshit said this would bring down the monthly expenses on kitchen items in households by an average of 25 per cent to 30 per cent. The price of 1 kg of arhar dal would be Rs.65, white gram would sell at Rs.39, moong washed at Rs.79, mixed dal at Rs.39, urad washed at Rs.58, yellow peas at Rs.26, sugar at Rs.41 per kg, sunflower oil at Rs.61.45 per litre, coconut oil at Rs.85 per litre, parmal rice at Rs.21 per kg and onions at Rs.16 per kg.

The price of 200 gm coriander powder would be Rs.13.65, turmeric power would sell at Rs.28.35 and red chilli powder at Rs.14.70. Amchur powder and garam masala would be sold in packs of 100 gm at Rs.10 each. Nafed tea would be sold in 500-gm packs at Rs.70 while loose sugar would be sold at Rs.39 per kg.

The Chief Minister also informed that to curb the activities of profiteers, black marketers and hoarders, a helpline has been started at phone No. 23370841 and 1800110841. People can lodge complaints about retailers who might be overcharging them.

Protecting farmers

Prof. Thomas said the main objective of Nafed was to protect the interest of farmers by intervention at an appropriate time. And, he said, this was the first time the Federation had intervened to safeguard the interests of the common citizens.
