Gadag limps back to normality

Staff Correspondent

Hubli: Gadag is limping back to normality after violence erupted on Friday evening following defiling of the statue of cooperative leader K.H. Patil.

Shops and business establishments remained open on Saturday. However, the kind of traffic that is usually seen during weekends was missing.

North Western Karnataka Road Transport Corporation resumed bus services to moffusil centres only by late afternoon. The services were suspended in the morning after violent protestors burnt seven of its buses. The long route buses from other places also weren’t allowed to enter the city and were diverted.

As a result, the old and new bus stations of Gadag wore a deserted look.

The number of private vehicles especially four-wheelers were also less as most people were hesitant to bring them out. It might be recalled that several private vehicles were damaged during the Friday’s protest.

However by afternoon, people started coming out and once the bus services resumed the city slowly returned to normality. The Gadag police have arrested four more persons on Friday night, taking the total number of people arrested so far to 22.

While 18 people have been arrested on charges of being involved in vandalism, four members of Sri Rama Sene have been arrested on charge of defiling the statue.

Meanwhile, addressing presspersons in Gadag, son of K.H. Patil and former leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Council H.K. Patil condemned the act of defiling the statue and demanded that the perpetrators should be nabbed at the earliest.
