Maoists abduct BDO in Jharkhand

JAMSHEDPUR (JHARKHAND): Suspected Maoists abducted a Block Development Officer from his office chamber at Dalbhumgarh in Jharkhand’s East Singhbhum district on Saturday.

Prasant Kumar Layak, 37, was in his chamber after a Lok Adalat related to the NREGA when two persons armed with guns barged in and took him away at gunpoint, Sunil Kumar, Sub-Divisional Officer of Ghatsila, told PTI.

The abductors came by three motorcycles, and two of them sneaked into Mr. Layak’s chamber with their guns hidden in a bag.

The police said they sped away towards Kokpara.

All adjoining police stations were alerted and a massive combing operation, led by Superintendent of Police Navin Kumar Singh, was launched.

The incident took place when Chief Minister Shibu Soren was attending functions in Jamshedpur, barely 65 km away. — PTI
