Ex-servicemen seek fair deal

Staff Reporter

BHUBANESWAR: Ex-servicemen here on Sunday expressed their disappointment over lack of job opportunities for them in Orissa.

At a convention organised by Orissa Ex-servicemen League (OEL), former servicemen said while other States provided them more than 12 per cent of reservation in different categories of services, Orissa earmarked only 3 per cent reservation in jobs.

OEL president group captain J. Brahma said ex-servicemen had long been demanding increase of reservation in government jobs from 3 per cent to at least 5 per cent.

“After spending years in army, navy and air force and rendering service to nation, we have now got nothing. Our wards are also ignored. Children of ex-servicemen enjoy about 10 per cent reservation in schools and colleges for pursuing education in other States, reservation in admissions into engineering and medical colleges is 2 per cent and 3 per cent respectively in Orissa,” they alleged.

Ex-servicemen also demanded construction of ‘Sainik Aram Ghar’, a transit house for Sainiks in Bhubaneswar. They said Andhra Pradesh had 20 sainik aram ghars. Union and State governments should join hands to facilitate such transit house.
