Japanese delegation visits State

Looks at project sites in Malappuram and Ernakulam

Kochi: A high-level delegation from Kao Corporation, a fast moving consumer goods (FMCG) major in Japan, visited Kerala over the weekend. The group is planning investments of Rs.150 crore in the country.

Kao Corporation is one of the leading manufacturers of FMCG products, especially soaps, detergents, lifestyle and healthcare products in Asia.

Founded in 1887, the Tokyo-based Kao Corporation has a capital base of 85.4 billion Yen and has an employee strength of 33,745.

The company is planning to set up its manufacturing and marketing facilities in India.

The delegation, headed by Hiroshi Yamaguchi and Takashi Tanaka, held talks Additional Chief Secretary T. Balakrishnan, Alkesh Sharma, Secretary, Industries (IP) & managing director, Kerala State Industrial Development Corporation (KSIDC), and senior officials of the KSIDC and Kinfra.

Facilities visited

The Japanese team also visited proposed sites for the project at Kuttippuram in Malappuram and Koratty in Ernakulam. The team visited the facilities of Nitta Gelatin India Ltd. in Kochi as well, a joint venture of KSIDC and Nitta Gelatin Inc, Japan.

The visit of the Japanese delegation was the result of talks held by a State government delegation with Kao Corporation in Tokyo in Japan in October 2009, during the visit of the Additional Chief Secretary and Secretary, Industries (IP) to Tokyo and Osaka.

The fact that Kerala holds immense potential for investment in the areas of food processing, FMCG, healthcare, pharmaceuticals, bio-technology and nano-technology had been brought to the attention of many Japanese corporates with whom the team had interacted during their visit, including Riken Vitamin Co. Ltd., Nitta Corporation and Nitta Gelatin Inc.

The visit of this delegation was co-ordinated by the KSIDC, the premier promotional agency of the State government which has partnered with Japanese companies Mitsubishi Corporation and Nitta Gelatin Inc. in the past, said a press release.
